Biography

Spanish clarinetist, José Luis Inglés, is a multi-faceted artist with a passion for communicating with his audience. A XXI century musician who loves to challenge and be challenged, José Luis’ repertoire ranges from classical and jazz, to flamenco and improvisation, which he performs in innovative new programmes “bristling with life” (La Opinion de Murcia).

José Luis is artistic director and member of the young and innovative Basel chamber ensemble – Camerata Rhein. He performs regularly as a soloist throughout Europe and in 2021 recorded Jean Françaix’s clarinet concerto with the Basel Symphony Orchestra under conductor Anu Tali.

With a passion for diversity, José Luis is continually creating new programmes. Most recently he played at the Cartagena Jazz Festival with his own Quartet in a new flamenco jazz fusion show, entitled “Sin Piel” (“Skinless”) and in February 2022 gave the European premiere of composer, Oscar Navarro’s new score, “Leyendas” (“Legends”).

Born in Spain’s historical port city of Cartagena in 1994, José Luis Inglés studied clarinet at the Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya (ESMUC) in Barcelona with Josep Fuster and at the Basel Music Academy with François Benda. He is a laureate of the Orpheus Competition in Switzerland, the Concours National d’Exécution Musicale Riddes (Second Prize), the North International Competition Stockholm (First Prize) the BOG Stiftung Competition in Switzerland (Second Prize) and Fano International clarinet competition (First Prize).
