Pianist Alberto Urroz´s performances are uncompromising in the service of music. The legendary Pnina Salzman wrote of him: “Alberto Urroz is a very fine pianist.
His playing is extremely musical, his technique impressive and his interpretations are always interesting, full of character and authority. I recommend him with all my heart”. Alberto Urroz has performed throughout Spain, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Israel, South Korea and the United States where he debuted, sponsored by the Consulate General of Spain, at Carnegie Hall in New York in June 2008.
Since his first performance with the Navarra Symphonic Orchestra at the Gayarre Theatre in Pamplona, Mr. Urroz has given concerts at the most important halls and festivals in Spain, including the Peralada and Santander International Festivals, and has been invited by prestigious international cultural institutions such as Madrid National Auditorium, Conde Duque Auditorium, Juan March Foundation, San Fernando Fine Arts Royal Academy, Royal Conservatory of Music, Circulo de Bellas Artes, The Dance Theatre of Harlem, The City University of New York, Iberian Foundation for Spanish Music, Las Canals Festival (France), Italian Institute of Culture, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Sejong Center Seoul, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, etc. Recently, Mr Urroz has performed in the Salle du Munsterhof in Strasbourg (France) a virtuoso program with works by Scarlatti, Mozart, Chopin, Liszt, Schumann, Brahms, Albéniz and Bartók.
In 2010 he performed a very well received Chopin recital in several venues in Madrid and Navarra. In January 2009, Mr. Urroz opened the celebration of Iberia´s centenary in Madrid Conde Duque Auitorium playing the brilliant piano suite finished by Albéniz in 1909. In December, he performed it again at the prestigious Sejong Center in Seoul (South Korea). Currently, Mr. Urroz lives in Madrid and teaches piano performance at Arturo Soria Conservatory where he also serves as Head of Piano Department. Since 2004, he is Founder and Artistic Director of the Mendigorria International Music Festival, a unique festival in Northern Spain, which has received favorable reviews from the local and national press. The festival has been privileged by the presence of internationally acclaimed musicians who have given recitals in different Venues.
In August 2012 will be celebrating the ninth edition with a new program of concerts and masterclasses for international students. The festival also boasts interesting musical productions like Liszt´s Via Crucis with contemporary dance. Born into a family of musicians, Mr. Urroz graduated with honors from the Royal Conservatory in Madrid where he studied with Joaquín Soriano. After winning the Jeunesses Musicales 1993 Piano Competition in Madrid, he moved to Israel to study at the Tel-Aviv University with Pnina Salzman, a pupil of Alfred Cortot and Arthur Rubinstein.
He moved to the United States in 1996 on a Navarra state scholarship, and studied in New York (1996-99) with Oxana Yablonskaya. He has also been a student of Solomon Mikowsky and Donn-Alexander Feder at Manhattan School of Music (1997) and was awarded a Hartt Talent Scholarship (1998) from the University of Hartford. Other teachers include György Sandor, Fanny Waterman, Ana María Trenchi and Ena Bronstein. An enthusiastic performer of chamber music, Mr. Urroz has been finalist of the Emerson String Quartet Competition and plays regularly with renown artists such as the mezzo Laure de Marcellus, violinist Pedro León, the American company Dance Theatre of Harlem and many other outstanding musicians of his generation.
