Sebastián Gimeno Balboa was born in Manises (Valencia), where he began his oboe studies at the “Artística Manisense” Music Society under the guidance of Javier Guna.

Shortly afterwards he entered the Conservatorio Superior “Joaquín Rodrigo” in Valencia, studying with Jesús Fuster, where he completed his degree and received the special prize of “Premio de Honor Fin de Grado Superior”.

That same year he was given a scholarship by the Ministry of Education and Culture in order to continue his studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Professors Melinda Maxwell and Douglas Boyd, where he was subsequetly awarded the “Leila Bull Oboe Prize”.

On finishing his studies in London, he chose to continue as a student of Maurice Bourgue at the Conservatoire de Musique in Geneva (Switzerland), where he was awarded his diploma with the “Premier Prix de Virtuosité avec Distinction” as well as the “Raymond Weil” Prize.

Apart from the aforementioned scholarship from the Ministry of Education and Culture, he also benefited from scholarships awarded by the National Youth Orchestra of Spain (JONDE), Generalitat Valenciana (government of Valencia), Royal Academy of Music and Conservatoire de Musique, Geneva.

Sebastián has belonged to youth orchestras such as the JONDE (Spanish Youth Orchestra), EUYO (European Union Youth Orchestra), and GMJO (Gustav Mahler Jugend Orchester), touring all over Europe with conductors such as Bernard Haitink, Sir Colin Davis and Pierre Boulez.

He has performed repeatedly as Principal Oboe with orchestras throughout Europe including:Orchestra Filarmonica del Teatro alla Scala (Milan), Mahler Chamber Orchestra,Orchestra Mozart (Bologna), Budapest Festival Orchestra, Munich Chamber Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Deutsche Symphonie Orchester, Berlin, Orquesta de Cadaqués andSymphonica Toscanini (Italy), working with conductors such as Sir Neville Marriner, Ivan Fischer, Daniel Harding and Lorin Maazel.

As a soloist, he has performed the oboe concertos of W.A.Mozart and B.A. Zimmermann with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and the concertos by R.Strauss with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (Geneva).

In 2014 he premiered the concerto  ̈Grises Alcores ̈ with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León (OSCyL). This concerto was written for him by the composer Jesús Legido on a commission from the OSCyL, where Sebastián has held the position of Principal Oboe since 2005.

He is also a member of the OSCyL Wind Quintet, and Professor of Oboe at the Conservatorio Superior de Música in Salamanca.
